Graphic Designer

Working on a wide range of media, including magazines (Dalesman, Cumbria, Countryman, Down Your Way and Lakeland Walker), books, calendars and websites. Responsibilities include design and layout of magazine covers and spreads, as well as promotional materials and website graphics; book cover design; production of digital magazine editions for phones and tablets; photo research; proofreading; administration of both static and WordPress websites; management of pay-per-click ad campaigns.

Magazine Editor

Bingley Rural Magazine
October 2012-November 2013
Monthly magazine with circulation of 5700. Responsibilities included design-to-print; feature writing; sourcing and sub-editing content; proofreading; selling advertising space; budget management; producing advertisement artwork; managing companion website (www.bingleyruralmag.co.uk). This magazine has now merged with another publication, The Local Leader, for which I occasionally provide feature articles.

Freelance Editor, Web and Print Designer

Freelance editing, proofreading and copywriting for publishing companies including Collins ELT, as well as a number of businesses. Also provide design-to-print for business literature, including logo design, business cards, brochures, flyers, letterheads, posters and POS items such as banners, in addition to static and WordPress website development under my Melting Clock brand (www.meltingclockdesign.co.uk). Through Oliphant (www.oliphant-services.co.uk), I also provide book production, distribution and marketing services to independent authors looking to self-publish their work.

Responsible for two series, ’Issues’ for A-Level students and ‘Issues Today’ for Key Stage 3, as well as marketing materials and a members-only online resource, ‘Issues Online’. Titles covered a range of social issues, such as smoking, sexual health and the environment. During my time at Independence, I worked on nearly 300 publications. Responsibilities included researching content, commissioning illustrations, design and layout for covers and spreads, online content management, writing exercises and glossaries, creating graphs and sourcing photographs.

Handling a diverse range of projects for a number of clients, including travel guides and Key Stage 3 literacy titles. Responsibilities included project management; commissioning authors, photographers, cartographers and other freelancers; preparing and managing budgets; photo research; seeking copyright permissions, and liaising with clients.

I am a warranted leader for Girlguiding UK, running a local Ranger unit for girls aged 14-plus, and I also volunteer with the Woodcraft Folk youth organisation.

Additionally, I am a member of the management committee for my local community centre, as well as a member of the village gala committee.

Other interests include rambling, reading, creative writing, local history, knitting and crochet.
